<a href="#comment-753" rel="nofollow">@Brando </a>
Question: "If you have the passion and the will to do something, what are some ways to discover your purpose and get direction?"

Answer: Get ready for a mindfuck - I usually don't share this deeper stuff because people aren't ready for it, or they take it personally but here it goes. The idea that your life has a purpose is a construction of your ego. You have no purpose, just like a snail or bird has no purpose. You could say that your purpose, just like a bird or snail is to let the life that you were born to live, live through you. In English, that means to follow your intuition or that higher self that urges you forward. Listen to what your body tells you and live out those feelings. For example, a baby is true to its purpose in every moment. If it's hungry it cries, if its happy it smiles, if it wants to crawl, it crawls. Too often as adults, we create our lives to be a prison and we are the guard. The joy comes from letting go and following your desires only to reason that none of them mean anything and your life in the grand scheme of things means nothing either. You are just a tiny speck of consciousness running around on a dirt ball that is orbiting 1 sun out of trillions in the universe. Your purpose is whatever you choose it to be moment by moment.

You know I love accountants - that's why I have to make fun of you guys! ;) I'm glad you read "Crush It" its must read in my opinion. It sounds to me like you have a lot of different areas or passions you are working on. That is awesome if you feel like you are giving each of them the amount of energy and focus they deserve. In the past, I've found myself spreading myself too thin and focusing on too many areas and no significant progress is made in any. If you see this happening, my advice would be to choose one and really commit to it for a set amount of time. If its not the right thing for you, you will quickly find out and then you can focus on the next idea. Hope that helps.

I definitively need to connect these two things. There are so many things I like doing I cannot count them all, alas. What structured work I do for a living does not carry passion. I simply push through things out of integrity but is not something I enjoy doing. I haven't found the challenge on it for a long time and I must say taking on challenges is something I really enjoy. Had I lived in the middle ages I would certainly had been a Knight.

<a href="#comment-752" rel="nofollow">@Brando </a> Interesting blog.

I do have a website already - foongfest.tumblr.com As mentioned, my method of connecting all my hobbies is helping people get started on things they've never done before. Teaching is something I enjoy. I'm actually doing quite a bit of that in real life. I'm just working on making them into videos/posts. Will keep you updated.

@Robbie - "Conversely, if you have lots of access to your passion and creativity but little structure in your life, you may find yourself without a sense of purpose or direction in life." This is the tough one. If you have the passion and the will to do something, what are some ways to discover your purpose and get direction?

@Robbie - this post is awesome. You've helped me quite a bit to rediscover my passion and its really changed me for the better. I got this from Star Wars (I know, I know, how nerdy):

"What you focus on, determines your reality."

Shifting your focus from women (a pickup artist's sole focus) or strictly on your problems (a inner game junkie), to creating an awesome lifestyle, living your passion, enjoying yourself - is the best way to live life in balance.

@Dave F - Start that website immediately dude. And also, find a way to connect all your hobbies into one website. I did that with mine: www.strangehero.com. There, I put up posts on my interest in street art, various action sports, quotes, and i set missions for myself. Very fun and very educational too.

Why you hatin’ on us accountants? Accountants count (in both sense of the word) ?

But quality post as usual. A lot of it is reminiscent of the book “Crush It” by Gary Vaynerchuk (good read in relating the internet age with your passion).

Personally, I tend not to stick to one thing all the time but I do have a lot of passions. By that I mean I am drawn to those areas and spend a lot of time, energy and attention on them. Some examples are wine, food (both eating and cooking), fashion/style, outdoors/camping, climbing, cycling, fitness (and the nerdy exercise physiology stuff), photography, music (both playing and listening to several genres), philosophy/theology, and the list goes on.

For now, instead of figuring out which one passion to zone in on, I decided to just get started. I initially started a blog on food. It’s very new and still in existence (ownyourfood.tumblr.com) but I found it too ‘blah’ maintaining it and enlisted the help of my younger brother and cousin.

After more thinking, I guess my passion is experiencing as many facades of life, doing them as well as possible. One of the works in progress is to start a website that, well, helps get people started on things – more on that coming. I’m also helping out in a couple of startups focusing on the sports industry, which once again works on my passion for sports/outdoors and my finance background.

So for now, it seems like I’m bouncing all over the place but I think it’s fine for now. Rather than keeping everything to myself, I am doing a whole lot and closing in on what works and what doesn’t.

And in my opinion, here’s another key to ‘cashing in’ on your passions – don’t do it for anybody else but yourself. Don’t do it because it’s the cool thing to do, to make it part of your identity so other people think you’re cool, or to attract hot women. Just do it because you love it. It’s the cool thing just because you love it.

Discussion welcome.
